Dr. George G. McKinley, 82, Glasgow, died Wednesday, December 20, 2006, at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital. A native of Louisville, he was a son of the late Victor L. McKinley and Clara M. McKinley.
Dr. McKinley graduated from the University of Louisville School of Medicine and practiced for a brief period of time at Jenkins in Eastern Kentucky. He then received a fellowship in Anatomy at the University of Toronto under Dr. Grant. He underwent two years of training at Sunnybrook General Hospital in Toronto for Nuclear Medicine; then became certified in Nuclear Medicine and later brought that skill to Glasgow for the first time. Dr. George returned to the University of Louisville to complete two years of Internal Medicine, where he met his future wife, Carolyn Howard, of Glasgow. He then served his country by teaching at the Medical Field Service School in San Antonio from 1952 to 1954. After completing his residency program in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital in Louisville, he and his wife, Dr. Carolyn McKinley, began their pediatric practice at the Howard Clinic in July of 1957. He retired from practice in 1990, due to failing health.
Dr. McKinley had an avid interest in model railroads. He was a railroad history buff, an avid reader and collector of books and had a great interest in bird watching and identification. He was a member and former elder of the South Green Street Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Dr. Carolyn Howard McKinley; two sons, Dr. George Franklin McKinley and wife, Betty Jane, of New York, NY; and Dr. Thomas Lawrence McKinley of Boca Raton, FL; two grandsons, Robert N. McKinley and Joseph Carl McKinley; two brothers, Dr. Robert N. McKinley and wife, Doris Jean, of Glasgow, and Victor L. McKinley, Jr. and wife, Vida, of Chico, CA; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Nancy McKinley.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 23, 2006, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 9 pm. Friday at the funeral home.
