Margarett Elizabeth Matthews Alexander, 92, widow of Robert Oliver Alexander, daughter of James Allen Matthews and Lillie Belle Depp Matthews, was born July 9, 1913 and died Monday, December 26, 2005. A life-long resident of Barren County and member of First Christian Church, she was the devoted mother of Pryntha Alexander Hardenbergh (Murray) of Lexington, Patricia Alexander Nielsen (Chris) of Lexington, Robert M. Alexander (Zara) of Glasgow, Judy Alexander Stokes (Bob) of Glasgow, Anna Margarette Alexander Wilson (Bobby Day) of Nicholasville, and Bobby Chapman (Joan) of Dalton, Georgia. She was the beloved Nana of Meg Travis (Bill), John T. Alexander (Holly), Ashley Donovan (Derek), Andrea Nielsen, Erik Nielsen (Cristy), Nathan Day Wilson (Janice), Adam Wilson (Delena), Shana Langley (Michael), Allison Stokes, Russell Chapman (Michelle), and Rob Chapman (Jackie). Her great grandchildren were Miller and Caroline Travis; Tipton, Sims, and Depp Alexander; Clarissa, Patricia, and Matthew Wilson; Alexander Langley; and McKenzie and Nicholas Chapman. She was a special aunt to many nieces and nephews who showed her great love and devotion.
She was preceded in death by Robert Alexander, her husband of fifty-seven years ; her parents; three brothers and their wives, B.F. and Bess Matthews, John T. and Oma Matthews, and James and Dorothy Matthews; an infant sister, Gladys Christine Matthews; and a dear cousin, Fanny Depp Koellner; two grandchildren, Pryntha Raye and Robert Aaron Wilson; and one great grandchild.
She was Mother of the Year in 1966 and received the Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Citizen Award in 1971. Among her special commitments was her devotion to Glasgow Scottie Band as the designer and seamstress of the Scottish kilts. A devoted sports fan, she supported all Glasgow Scottie teams and the University of Kentucky Wildcats. She served First Christian Church for many years as Cradle Roll Superintendent.
She will be remembered for her generosity, love, wit, sense of humor, and recollections of family history, and especially her ability to tell a good story. As Mom, Nana, Great Nana, Aunt Margarett, or Mrs. A., she will be missed yet always cherished.
Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers, and her great grandchildren will be honorary pallbearers.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 29, 2005, at the First Christian Church with burial in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home and after 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.
