Dan Atkinson

Dan David Atkinson, 84, of Glasgow, Kentucky went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, July 12, 2020, at his residence. He was born April 15, 1936, in Barren County to the late Paul and Perni Starr Atkinson. He was also preceded in death by his five sisters, Marian C. Steffey (Clyde), Mary Bryant Froedge, Betty Pursley (James Robert), Carolyn Pace (Harold, “Squeaky”), and Virginia Kinslow.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Peggy Sue Jordan Atkinson; his children, Robin Shirley (Darren), and Derek Atkinson (Katherine); his five grandchildren, Brittany Shirley, Brianna Shirley, EmaKate Atkinson, Hayes Atkinson, and Ann Ashley Atkinson; brother-in-law Dan Kinslow; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
Dan was saved by God’s grace August 9th, 1972, at Dover Missionary Baptist Church in Haywood, where he was ordained as a deacon. At the time of his death, Dan was a member and deacon at Union #2 Missionary Baptist Church. He was also a beloved Sunday School teacher.
Dan was a veteran of the United States Marines and Air Force, where he served a collective nine years. He retired from SKF as a foreman after working there for over 20 years, then worked at the unemployment office in Barren County as a veteran representative for a decade.
After retirement, Dan was a Disabled American Veterans (DAV) service clerk. He was also a treasurer and adjutant for DAV Chapter 20 Glasgow. Dan served on the Honor and Color Guard for over 15 years.
A “walk-through” visitation for Dan Atkinson will be held at Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 15th and after 12:00 p.m. Thursday until time for services. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 16th 2020 at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery with DAV Chapter 20 of Glasgow providing military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the DAV Chapter 20 Glasgow or to T.J. Samson Hospice Care.
In keeping with the Governor’s mandates for funeral and memorial services, the number of attendees in the funeral home at any given time will be limited; no food permitted in the lounge; social distancing will be necessary; and face coverings are required.
Peggy, Robin & family, Derek & family…So very sorry to hear of Dan’s passing. Always thought a lot of him from the time my David and Derek were in school together. Our prayers are with each one of you at this time.

I would like to express my sympathy to the family of Dan. I worked with Dan at SKF and on two different occasions Dan was my foreman. Dan was a great guy, a great foreman and a very good friend. He will be very much missed by all..
