Dr. L G Dickinson
August 19, 1945 ~ December 6, 2021
Dr. Lewis Goodman Dickinson, 76, died peacefully on Monday, December 6, in Glasgow, Kentucky. A graduate of Glasgow High School, he received a degree from Transylvania University before entering the University of Louisville School of Medicine, following in the footsteps of his father. The son of Lewis Dickinson and Selma Goodman Dickinson, he was born August 19, 1945, a few days after his father came home on leave from Army service in Italy.
After his graduation from medical school, Dr. Dickinson remained in Louisville to complete his internship. In 1973 he entered the Navy and was stationed at Bethesda Naval Hospital. While in the Navy, he attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander during the Vietnam Era. With plans to enter practice with his father and uncle back in Glasgow, he decided pulmonology was a needed specialty in his hometown. So, in 1975 after his Navy service, he entered West Virginia University School of Medicine for additional study and experience in that specialty.
When Dr. Dickinson returned to Glasgow and started practicing medicine with his father Dr. Lewis Dickinson and his uncle Dr. John Dickinson, there was some confusion in having two Dr. Lewis Dickinsons, particularly at the hospital. So, Dr. Lewis G. Dickinson began to be called Dr. LG Dickinson to differentiate between the two.
Dr. LG Dickinson was licensed under the Kentucky Board of Licensure from 1971 to 2017. He had membership in the American College of Physicians and the Society of Internal Medicine. He served a term as Chief of Staff at T. J. Samson Community Hospital and as president of the Kentucky Medical Association.
As an avid outdoorsman and known to many of his friends as “The Trailmeister”, Dr. Dickinson enjoyed hiking and camping and went spelunking in many area caves, even helping to map a portion of Mammoth Cave. With his cousin Benny Dickinson and others, he climbed Mt. Rainier in the state of Washington and Mt. Whitney in California, the highest mountain in the contiguous United States. He loved Glacier National Park and thought it was the most beautiful place he ever visited. Dr. Dickinson’s knowledge of trees and birds was matched only by his father’s. He actively supported preservation of the local Rotary Scout Reservation, where he, his father, his brothers, and other relatives and friends spent many happy hours.
Dr. Dickinson was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, colleague, and friend. He is survived by his high school sweetheart, Sherry Jo Depp Dickinson, his wife of 57 years. His son, Jefferson Lewis Dickinson (Tara Jo Frazier) survives him, as well as two granddaughters, Joely Elaine Dickinson and Abigail (Abby) Lewis Dickinson, and a step-granddaughter Cameron Nash. Other survivors include one sister, Jeanne Dickinson White and husband John White of Raleigh, NC; one brother, John Day (Jake) Dickinson and wife Pat Martin Dickinson; and one sister-in-law, Jan Wussow Dickinson, all of Glasgow. Two nieces, three nephews, and numerous cousins also survive. Dr. Dickinson was preceded in death by his parents Dr. Lewis Dickinson and Selma Goodman Dickinson, brother Temple Dickinson, and special cousin Benjamin (Benny) Dickinson.
Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM and from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Friday at the First Christian Church, 1100 N. Race St., Glasgow prior to the memorial service there at 1:00 PM. Graveside service to follow at Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Family will return to the church for a bereavement meal.
Memorial contributions may be made to Rotary Scout Reservation, c/o Ben Rogers, Rogers and Driver, 102 East Public Square, Glasgow, Kentucky 42141.
Arrangements entrusted to Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home.
