William Alfred “Bill” Vien
April 13, 1963 ~ January 15, 2023
William “Bill” Vien, 59, of Glasgow, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2023 at his residence. A native of Pittsfield, New Hampshire, he was the son of the late Alfred “Joe” Vien and Constance “Connie” Vien.
Bill was an avid outdoorsman. He loved fishing, hunting and hiking. He worked his dream job at Yosemite National Park for ten years, and then continued with the park service at Glacier National Park for another five years. He always had many stories to tell about his years with the park service and living in the high country of the mountains. His passions for the outdoors also led him to be an excellent gardener wherever he lived. He enjoyed growing both flowers and vegetables to share with others; eagerly awaited the new plant catalogues every winter; and exploring new greenhouses ever spring.
Bill also loved spending time with family and friends, and made the long trip home to New Hampshire as often as he could. He loved to play board games and card games, especially cribbage. He was a long time member of the “Laughs a Lot” game group here in Glasgow.
Bill was an active member of First Christian Church in Glasgow, serving as a deacon. He was a graduate of the Education For Ministry program from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, and went on to become a mentor for the program in 2008. His love of serving others led him to help start a food pantry ministry called “Loaves and Fishes” at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in 2006, and then bringing the ministry to First Christian Church in 2015, where it has flourished in helping families.
In 2007, Bill married the love of his wife, Barbara. Together they enjoyed fishing, travel, cooking, and weekly cribbage games. Their strong, loving, bond was evident to all who knew them. He was a great husband, and had a generous spirit.
Besides his parents, Bill was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred “Tiger” Vien and Todd Vien.
He is survived by his wife Barbara, Cousins Tina Mayotte Metcalf (Roger), Tanya Mayotte Bitzas (Jimmy), and Jason Mayotte (Tammy); His loving Aunt Cynthia Mayotte; many second and third cousins, whom he loved dearly; and two brothers, Tabb Vien and Chris Vien.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 4, 2023 at the First Christian Church. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday and after 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to funeral expenses or to the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry at First Christian Church. Arrangements entrusted to Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home.
