Anna Simmons
Annie Pearl “Anna” Simmons, 98, formerly of Glasgow, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2023 at her residence in Elizabethtown. A native of Barren County, she was the daughter of the late James Roddy Burris and Gertrude Lessenberry Burris.
After graduation from high school at the age of 17, Anna became employed at the county school superintendent’s office. With the lack of personnel due to the war, she, at age 19, was employed as a teacher at Devasher School at Austin. Following the death of her father, the family then moved to Bowling Green where she enrolled at Western Kentucky State College from which she received her teaching degree. Her teaching career took her to Russellville, Bowling Green, Spartanburg, South Carolina, and eventually back to Glasgow, where she taught a number of years at Liberty Street Elementary School. Anna was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church where she was also a faithful member of the Golden Rule Sunday School Class, the Sanctuary Choir, and the Tuesday morning bible study.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, William H. “Bill” Simmons, and one brother James Otho Burris.
Survivors include three children: Patty Owen and husband Sid of Hardinsburg, Jean Power and husband Ben of Georgetown, SC, and Don Simmons and wife Susan of Elizabethtown; four grandchildren: Andrew Owen and wife Desireé, Jennie Jean Owen, Billy Simmons, and Matt Simmons; two great-grandchildren: Natasha Owen and Wyatt Owen.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday at the First Christian Church with burial in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be after 11:00 a.m. Monday at the church. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the First Christian Church or to Hosparus. Arrangements entrusted to Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home.
So very sorry to hear of precious Anna’s passing. She was such a precious lady and I loved seeing her and Bill at the Silver Sneakers at the Y. Prayers for the family ????
