Gladys Virginia Mayes, 96, Lick Branch Road, Glasgow, died Friday, June 29, 2001, at the T.J. Samson Community Hospital. A daughter of the late Robert and Naomi Deatherage Nichols, she was a homemaker and a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include six daughters, Dolores Jarvis and her husband, Clem, of Louisville, Juanita Nichols and her husband, Bennie Carl, of Glasgow, Bernadine Gehrig of Mississippi, Caroljean Smith and her husband, Stanley, of Glasgow, Grace Ward and her husband, Reginald K. of Glasgow, Karen Peden and her husband, S. Ray of Texas; one son, Jerry Mayes and his wife, Janice of Glasgow; one daughter-in-law, Donna Mayes of Glasgow; one sister, Mary Wood of Virden, Illinois; one niece, Ruth Baird of Virden, Ill., one nephew-in-law, Jessie Mayes of Odessa, Texas; 25 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thurston Mayes; a son, Norman E. Mayes, Sr.; a daughter, Virginia Mayes Peregrin; a grandson, Michael Peregrin; a great-grandson, Jason Leftwich; a brother, Harry L. Nichols; two sons-in-law, Steve Peregrin and Carol Gehrig; and a nephew, John Nichols.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Happy Valley Memorial Gardens. Friends may call after 6:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Alternate expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Bethel United Methodist Church.
