Ruth E. Bale, 92, Glasgow, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at the Barren County Health Care Center. Born in Louisville, KY, she was the daughter of the late Shelby Pepper and Lizzie McCubbin Bale. She attended Georgetown College, Georgetown, KY and graduated from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, with a degree in Speech and later did graduate study at American University, Washington, DC.

In early life, she was a news reporter for the Hardin County Enterprise and was the Executive Secretary of the Hardin County American Red Cross. A long-time resident of Washington, DC, she served as a congressional staff assistant to Frank Chelf, who represented the old 4 th District of Kentucky, in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Always interested in the performing and visual arts, she was a member of the Arts Club of Washington, the Women’s Committee for the National Symphony, the American Opera Scholarship Society and a founding member of the Friends of Kennedy Center. She was also a member of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Dr. S. Garnett Bale of Elizabethtown and a sister-in-law, Joy Bale Boone of Glasgow. She is survived by six nieces and nephews, Shelby G. Bale of Glasgow, Barbara O. Bale of Lexington, Daryl Bale Vann and her husband, E. P. “Pat”, of Glasgow, Dr. Richard H. Bale and his wife, Gina, of Spokane, WA, Dr. Bradley F. Bale and his wife, Pam, of Spokane, and Dr. Phillip W. Bale and his wife, Kristen, of Glasgow; a niece-in-law, Robin Bale of Tacoma, WA.; fifteen great-nieces and nephews; eight great-great nieces and nephews; many cousins.

Graveside services will be held 4:00 p.m. (EDT) Saturday, April 26, 2003, at the Elizabethtown City Cemetery under the direction of the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home. There will be no visitation prior to services. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Horse Cave Theater or to a favorite charity.
